Buddha Collapsed Out Of Shame

Buddha Collapsed Out Of Shame is a film that opens here in the Toronto tomorrow night at the Toronto Human Rights Watch Film Festival. The film is "a dramatic and horrifying illustration of the tragedy that has befallen the children of Afghanistan. Made by a young Iranian woman director (Hana of the famed Makhmalbaf family), this gritty story of a tiny little girl who want to go to school is filmed against the wreckage of the bombed out Buddha on the great Silk Road."

For more information you can check out the Toronto Human Rights Watch Film Festival website.

I wanted to attend this as I believe in the importance of this film. This little girl could have been my own mother 70 years ago in Ukraine. She too just wanted to go to school.

Cheers!

BYB Sunday - Let Your White Birds Smile Up

I had been feeling a bit down earlier this week, when an odd memory popped into my head. You must know the feeling, it's like a short vid clip pulled from some dusty recess of the brain. The memory was of being a little girl, dancing on our backyard picnic table with flowers in my hair. :D

There was this song that had come on the radio...something about "let your white birds smile up" with a gorgeous tribal like beat.....and 30 some odd years later...it was getting stuck in my head again.

I called up my Mom, and she too vaguely remembered this childhood incident. It was a backyard family party, and my older then teenage cousins "flower children" wove flowers into my hair. The song she thought based on the lyrics I could recall must have been Melanie an artist that had been one of her faves in that era.

I took a chance and started surfing around the net, and the video clip you see above is what I found! The song is called Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) and the artist is Melanie Safka accompanied by the Edwin Hawkins Singers circa 1970. Its my song!!!

My blessings this week are firstly Melanie Safka, such a beautiful song, and I can see and hear your joy in singing it! What a beautiful, hippie, flower child, with a magical voice!!! If you watch the clip you will see (I believe it might have been the Ed Sullivan show) a mostly older white crowd digging this most socially radical, liberal song! Very cool! B)

Secondly Youtube for allowing a whole new generation to discover these songs, and artists. I saw one comment from a 13 year old saying her Grandmother loved this song! And for allowing this middle-aged Mom to go back in time if only for a few minutes to a sweet, and gentle world where a little girl danced with flowers in her hair. :D

My Mom was quite the hippie liberal in those days as well. I'm going to see if I can dig up a pic of us in the late 60's, and post it up.

Cheers!

Photo Of Fire On Queen Street West

I was shocked to hear of a six alarm blaze on Queen West via my radio alarm clock this morning. The photo above is just a glimpse of the devastation. Here is a snippet from 680:

Toronto - Firefighters continue to battle a six-alarm blaze in downtown Toronto that engulfed eight storefronts with apartments, Wednesday.

The fire began just after 5 a.m. in a row of two-storey buildings lining Queen Street West, near Bathurst Street.

At least one building unit collapsed, but there were no reports of injuries.

The fire affected traffic and the TTC. The Queen Street streetcar was diverted both ways in the area, using Shaw and King streets and Spadina Avenue.

Fans were brought in to St. Patrick, St. Andrew and Osgoode TTC subway stations because of the burning smell that has seeped in.

Traffic was blocked at Portland Street, with fire trucks lining the streets.

The fire may have started in a rear shed, but that has yet to be confirmed.

The last time Toronto had a fire of this magnitude was in October of 2006, when a paint store on Queen Street East was destroyed. No one was injured in that blaze.

Our Most Romantic Vacation

I spent most of this past long weekend cooped up inside. In part this was due to my illness, but mostly because the weather has just been nasty here, cold, damp, rainy, you get the idea. To beat the "stuck inside blues" so to speak, Matthew and I kicked around a few good vacation ideas for later in the year, and when I am hopefully on the mend from my thyroid condition. :)

Niagara Falls

Our most romantic vacation together to date was in Niagara Falls a couple of years back. Not only are things to do in Niagara Falls geared towards romance (they are the honeymoon capital after all) they also have oodles of kitschy shops, fun little museums etc. It was great just to play (and we did play lots of mini golf lol!) and relax with each other. :D

There are a lot of fun things to do, and see if you are going as a family as well. Trusted Tours & Attractions is a great place to start online if you are planning a trip to Niagara Falls. Right now they are holding a contest to win a free Canon PowerShot digital camera as well, so it is definitely worth checking them! B)

BYB Sunday - The Toronto Public Library

This past week saw me visiting the Toronto Public Library twice, and both of these visits reminded me of what a blessing the library truly is for me. Not only am I fortunate to be living close enough to walk to two different branches from the dreaded compound, but I can also use my home computer to order up any book within their entire system, and have it delivered for free to any branch of my choosing! How cool is that! And the library is absolutely free to use.

I was able to make a very small donation towards the purchase of new materials, but it really is not enough to cover the enjoyment our library has brought to me since I can remember.

Thank you for visiting my own wee corner of the www, and I hope you have a goodly week ahead!!! :D

Cheers!

Dr Henry Morgentaler Deserves The Order Of Canada

"Every Mother A Willing Mother, Every Child A Wanted Child"

Morgentaler (right), with NDP Leader Jack Layton in August 2005

"Born in Lodz, Poland, he survived the Holocaust and came to Canada at the end of World War II. Completing his medical studies at the Universite de Montreal in 1953 he opened a family practice in Montreal. As a Humanist leader he promoted the idea that people had a right to control their own sexuality and reproduction, without interference by the state. In 1967 he presented a brief on behalf of the Humanist Fellowship of Montreal to the House of Common’s Health and Welfare Committee, where he urged that Canada’s restrictive abortion law be repealed.

“I have a commitment to human values, to human dignity,
to respect for people who are different,
to social justice, to a richer life for all people,
to democracy in its broadest social and political sense”
Henry Morgentaler - 1965

In the following years he challenged the criminal code by providing safe abortions for women in his clinic in Montreal. He faced several trials and was acquitted each time by a jury; he went to jail for 10 months when a jury acquittal was reversed by a higher court. His belief in a “Women’s Right to Choose” eventually led to a change in the law. Finally, after years of struggle the law against abortion was declared unconstitutional and struck down by the Supreme Court of Canada on January 28th, 1988. He continues to campaign province by province, seeking to provide abortion services to women deprived of access, a struggle which continues to this day."

As a Canadian, as a woman, and perhaps most importantly as a Mom of three young women, I want to say thank you to Dr. Henry Morgentaler. I have never had to face the choice of having an abortion, but thanks to Dr. Morgentaler if I needed to I would have that choice, and that all Canadian women now have that choice in privacy, and with compassion, safety, and dignity.

Dr Morgentaler deserves the Order of Canada for the tremendous work he has done for all Canadian women now, and in the future despite the death threats, from wackos, and bombings of his clinic here in Toronto....he is a hero! B)

BYB Sunday - A Supportive Partner

I am sad....all of the time lately.....

The image above really suits my mood (it is graffiti I bet Sandy will like it) of late. In part it is feeling sorry for myself since my diagnosis with Graves' and because my body is rebelling against all of these extra hormones....and my emotions are completely out of whack to the point I am feeling crazy more often than not...chemically imbalanced....

I see the specialist March 26th....not soon enough, but I am looking forward to it...

My blessing is a very supportive partner.

I have read that many marriages end up in a mess because of this disease, and I am grateful that I have such a loving, kind, understanding partner in the face of my almost constant black moods. I can see why it is so hard on the spouses of people who have Graves' disease as many sufferers go through a lot of mental anguish, and unbalance. Sometimes I even scare myself!

At least there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and I am surrounded by loving people. I only wish that everyone who had to go through such health issues were equally as blessed.

Are You Worried About Identity Theft?

Are you concerned about identity theft? I have read quite a few articles on how easy it is to steal identities in this online age, and I do know at least one person that has had their identity stolen. Creepy eh!

It is something that bothers me, and that is why I was really interested in checking out the Lifelock website.

You might be familiar with them from the news. They provide a service that secures your personal information, and guarantees your identity. Pretty cool eh! Basically they are your advocate with the credit bureaus, making sure you get your reports, and they are accurate, getting your name off of pre-approved credit lists, (a way people can usurp your identity, and commit fraud that I've heard of) and they can even help you if you lose your wallet! B)

This service really might have helped out my friend (I won't give out her name or she would kill me) who had her identity stolen, and I think it might be worthwhile. Have you checked them out? What do you think? :D

Today I'm Feeling Strongly

Strength is a card of courage, determination and inner might. You are in a position to deal with whatever comes your way. You have reached a position of influence and no longer need to force your beliefs upon others. You are aware of the temptations that exist, but your ability to resist them is strong. Be careful not to take advantage of your power or risk becoming abusive and destructive. Listen to your inner voice and trust your instincts.

This is my Tarot card of the day, and it is apt because I am feeling not too bad today B)

Online Resource For Medical Career Training

It is funny, I have always been interested in medicine, in fact at one time I thought I could make a fine physician indeed! However, I am not so certain that I could personally cut it as a nurse. Nurses in my opinion deserve a lot of respect for what they do!

Have you ever thought of becoming a nurse? How about pursuing a career in within the medical field like an ultrasound tech? I was checking out an online resource for medical career training earlier this morning, and they included listings for various types of schools including ultrasound tech school.

The website is well designed, and very easy to use in my own humble opinion. The site allows for you to check out all sorts of different career paths within medicine, your job prospects within a specific field, salary ranges, job expectations, requirements, and includes available schools by state, and online.

For fun I did check out the listing for ultrasound technician school, and was actually surprised at the availability! Granted these specialised techs seem to be in short supply here in Toronto so perhaps that is why?

If you are looking for more info on a possible medical career then definitely have a look at the Medical Career Training Online Resource. Just give some clicky love to one of the links above or click on the logo below.

My Thoughts On Winter.......

Winter is not really a season I overall enjoy....I much prefer the Spring, and especially the Fall.....

Perhaps this has something to due with the fact I am a Demeter. I will explain.....

Persephone, depicted with her pomegranate, by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1874 Tate Gallery, London

In Greek mythology, Hades kidnapped Persephone to be his wife. Zeus ordered Hades to return her to Demeter, the goddess of the earth and her mother. However, Hades tricked Persephone into eating the food of the dead so Zeus decreed Persephone would spend six months with Demeter and six months with Hades. During the time when her daughter is with Hades, Demeter becomes depressed and causes winter.

My maiden name is Demeter and my eldest daughter was born on the first day of Spring....this was not lost on me upon her arrival ... and I like to tell her that this is the reason I do not like the winter months overly much. :D

The Year Of The Rat

Today is the very first day of the Chinese New Year! This new day on the Chinese calendar ushers in the year of the rat. My grandmother was born in the year of the rat, and the sign description actually suits her to a tee.

"People born in the Year of the Rat are noted for their charm and attraction for the opposite sex. They work hard to achieve their goals, acquire possessions, and are likely to be perfectionists. They are basically thrifty with money. Rat people are easily angered and love to gossip. Their ambitions are big, and they are usually very successful."

Wishing all of my readers who celebrate a very Happy New Year!!!! And you bet I am wearing red .. :D

Toronto Major League Search - A Review

A few weeks ago a big old yellow page telephone book arrived at my door, and I was shaking my head in dismay at the waste of paper. I do not know about you, but I tend to use search engines to find local businesses etc instead of the old fashioned way. It is easier to find exactly what I am looking for online, does not take up space, and is better on the environment in my humble opinion. I do not want to turn this entry into a rant, instead I want to focus on the positive, and introduce you to Toronto Major League Search. This will be of interest to all my fellow Torontonians, and any of you ladies or gents that are planning a visit out this way. :D

Toronto Major League Search is very easy to use. You can look up all sorts of different types of businesses, museums, restaurants, hotels etc right from their home page. The searches include detailed street maps, as well as satellite maps.

I would recommend this service to others to check out. It is free, and it concentrates on our city making it more handy to do look ups as opposed to the info over load you get with some of the other search engines. B)

Swimming Pools To Close In Toronto

I find it very sad, and unsettling that the Toronto District School Board is now threatening to close swimming pools in our schools, and cancel swimming lessons for our children due to lack of funds. This after the City Of Toronto raises our taxes, and of course vote themselves raises. UGH!

Here is a snippet from 680 News:

The Toronto District School Board said it needs another $12 million a year to keep its pools afloat.

Board officials said without the money, they could be forced to drain the pools and cancel swimming lessons.

Liberal Education Minister Kathleen Wynne said there isn't any provincial money for city schools.

She told a Toronto newspaper that it's the responsibility of the community to keep them running.

The TDSB said plans were underway to close most of its 78 pools by September.

It is always the kids that suffer eh!

Disgusting!

British actress Maggie Smith, two-time Academy Award suffered with Graves' Disease

I do not want this blog to become solely a journal of my experiences with Graves' Disease, but I will update you from time to time.

I went to my doctor's yesterday and the final test results show something different than what he thought initially. I actually have Graves Disease as opposed to the under-active thyroid he figured I was suffering from, and I will need to see a Endocrinologist. I believe they will either have to remove the Thyroid or radiate it to kill it so to speak, and when that is done then I can go on the pills for the rest of my life. And finally, hopefully feel normal!

So now I am waiting for my doc to make the appointment with the specialist.

They put me on a beta-blocker too (propranolol) which scares me because I already have low blood pressure. This should help with some of my symptoms.

Cheers!

BYB Sunday - Knowing What Is Wrong

I haven't made too big of a deal of it here on the blog, but over the past six months I have not felt quite right. My health had been deteriorating gradually, and I kept blaming certain symptoms on quitting smoking, such as lethargy, weight gain, foggy thinking, mood swings etc. I figured it would all just go away as soon as my body rid itself of toxins. Well it has been six months of no smokes, and if anything I feel worse. Add to the list of symptoms joint pain, leg cramps and stiffness, and a lump in my throat.

Well this past Thursday my doctor gave me an answer to what has been going wrong with my body.

Blood tests I had earlier in the week have confirmed I suffer from Graves' Disease, which sounds much worse than it is.

Graves' Disease is a type of autoimmune disease that causes over-activity of the thyroid gland, causing hyperthyroidism. This over-activity is also sometimes called "toxic diffuse goiter." The thyroid gland helps set the rate of metabolism, which is the rate at which the body uses energy. When the thyroid is too active, it makes more thyroid hormones than the body needs. High levels of thyroid hormones can cause side effects such as weight loss, rapid heart rate and nervousness. This is an uncommon disease that affects 2 percent of all women at some time in their lives. Graves’ Disease also tends to affect women between the ages of 20 and 40, although it occurs in infants, children, and the elderly.

There is no cure, but with pills (I will need to take them for the rest of my life) it can be controlled. In about six weeks to a few months I should start feeling like my old self again. All of the symptoms listed above that I have been experiencing are apparently part of this condition.

My blessing is the relief of finding out what has been wrong, and starting on a road to recovery. :D

Cheers to good health, which I wish for all of you my blogging friends!

Photo Hunters - This Week's Theme: Narrow

Pickering, Ontario. Bay Ridges Marina near my Mother's house. It never ceases to amaze me how these boaters manage to dock their boats in what looks to me to be very narrow spaces! Are you a boater? If so kudos! I could never manoeuvre the boat in such cramped quarters.

Happy Photo Hunting, And Have A Great Weekend Everyone!

Looking In The Mirror

This week Blog Talkers asks:

Careful …

If you could tell your boss one thing without any consequences, and without profanity, what would it be?

Well .... I am self employed so I would currently be talking to myself, and quite frankly if I were doing THAT dear readers... I would sincerely be worried about my mental state. :p

Taking a mental break for a moment I'll play along.

Self to Self:

Do not forget the horror of the rat race, and continue to strive at making working at home for yourself successful!

Hey, YOU asked ... lol!

Cheers!
